Get the prepaid plan that’s as smart as you are. In September 2008, Comptroller Susan Combs launched the new Texas Tuition Promise Fund, the 529 prepaid tuition plan sponsored by the state of Texas.

The new plan enables families to prepay undergraduate tuition and required fees based on current 2009-10 rates for public four- and two-year colleges and universities in Texas.

For children under one year of age, the enrollment period is open through July 31. General enrollment for all children will re-open this coming September.

Encouraging career dreams

The Comptroller’s office also provides the Get a Life website developed for middle-schoolers to help them answer the question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”

Get a Life, at www.getalife.tx.gov, advises ‘tweens’ and teens to let their hobbies and interests guide them toward their dream career and to look for activities, classes, volunteer work and paid employment that let them try out possible careers and gain valuable knowledge and skills.

The website offers information about fast-growing and well-paying jobs, along with the education required for those jobs.

“Many skilled, professional jobs do not require a four-year college degree, but they do require some training at a community college or technical school,” Comptroller Susan Combs said. “We want kids to know there are a world of possibilities in Texas and many paths to success.”
